Goa

We have not done any long trips these past 2 years. There were many short ones but the excitement of a long journey with some new location was always enticing. So we decided to hit Goa for our 11th marriage anniversary (and Vanathy's birthday) this time.

After a initial check, the decision was to take the train as the landscape was (supposed to be) breathtaking and of course, the journey itself is something to look for. So the onward and return journeys booked. The search for a place to stay was a bit arduous and after much research (thanks to Tripadvisor), booked our stay at the Lemontree Amarante resorts in Candolim.

The start of the journey in the West coast express on the 21st August was bit of an anti-climax as the RAC tickets were confirmed at different berths across the coach. So after a bit of cajoling the others and exchanging of the berths, settled down to enjoy the ride. The train was on time and the chattering from the mom-daughter duo from Agartala, who spoke perfect Malayalam, was non-ending and the change in landscape outside was amazing. We reached Mangalore on time (4.20AM, 22nd) and had to reach the Mangalore Junction for our connection to Madgaon. By the time we reached there, the Trivandrum Rajdhani was already there. So we boarded and found that we are the only people in that coach apart from a few others.

Konkan coast

The travel through the Konkan coast is something not to be missed. The early morning sun rise, the 20-22 tunnels that come through, the fields, rivers and the backwaters and the quaint little stations that are invariably deserted with a wary looking station master waving the green flag, the beauty of that area is something to be marveled at. I've driven the Pacific coast highway long back along with friends and that was nothing compared to the beauty of the Konkan coast. Kids had fun counting the tunnels, the birds that flew by, the animals around and the glimpses of the Arabian sea to be had from the mountainous terrain.

Finally, Madgaon came and we alighted. Car was waiting to take us to the hotel and all of us fell asleep promptly during the 1 hour ride. Lemontree, Candolim is not a big property and though they've given us a double upgrade of the room (a garden room with a sit-out), still the size of the room was not big. But the beautiful pool, the exemplary food in both their restaurants and impeccable service make the place highly recommendable.
Candolim

After a short rest and a good lunch, we walked to the Candolim beach which is at a walkable distance from the backside of the resort. The beach was deserted and could see some people at a distance but for us the entire beach was empty. Kids had fun running around collecting shells and fighting over who got the big one. After spending some time there and then dinner at the Republic of noodles, which was excellent, retired for the day.

Spice plantation tour

Next day, donned the tourist hat and went around old Goa visiting the 2 huge cathedrals and then to the spice plantation for some lessons on the spices to be had in Goa, This followed a visit to the Panaji city and then onto the Dona Paula pier area.

There is a breathtaking viewpoint here and the walk across the pier was relaxing and fantastic. Next stop was the Miramar beach and it was so much fun to be at a clean beach and after playing in the water for a while, it was time for the Mandovi River cruise, It was nothing to write about, except the beautiful sun set to be seen and other than that, it was boring.

The next day, started with a visit to the Aguada Fort and then its time to hit the beaches again. We spent the rest of the day in the beaches, starting from Vagator, then to Anjuna and after lunch in the local Dominos, the Baga - Calungate. Myself and Vanathy got ourselves the tattoos and there is so much fun to be had there, we lost track of time.

Back in the hotel, spent more time in the pool and then its time for the anniversary dinner. The senior chef at the hotel, Mr. Venkat, took some pains to arrange for a beautiful candle-light dinner by the pool. A beautiful table setting, a separate waiter for the table, specially made starters for the dinner and fabulous food, and of course with the most beautiful girl in the world. The kids were busy in the billiards room and it was a fantastic night to remember.

Vanathy cutting the cake

Next day was Vanathy' birthday and after cutting the cake and distributing it, took off for some local shopping. The return journey started on the same evening and this time through the Ghats and via Hubli. It started raining the day we started back and were happy that it didn't start earlier. The train journey through the ghats was at once beautiful and of course, terrifying. With the mountains wrapped in mist and rain lashing at the windows, it was difficult not to enjoy and be scared at the same side. At one point, the Dudh sagar falls comes into full view with roaring waters and it was so beautiful that I didn't even realize to take a picture of the same.

Goa 2012 by Sibi Pranav

(After the trip, I asked the kids to write their versions of what they did in the 6 days of vacation. This is by Sibi. Sibi drew the maps by himself and I replaced with Google maps and added the pictures)

On 21st August morning, we went to Chennai Central to catch our train West coast express. Our first journey went like this.

Then the next morning, at 4AM, we have to go to another station in Mangalore. We reached there by 4.45AM. The train Trivandrum - H. Nizamudin Rajdhani express is at 5.50AM but it came at 5.15. We ran to our coach B3, but we went to B4 to our surprise. We ran back to our coach.

Reading time in the train
When it dawned, they gave breakfast. My father ate bread, cutlet and fries. Myself and my mother ate bread omelet and drank lime juice. Our second journey went like this.

We reached Madgaon. We went to our hotel Lemontree from there. We went to the beach in the backside of our hotel. There I collected shells. My father became friends with the Chef from Tamilnadu. That night I learned to play billiards.

Is it real?
Next day we went to a church. There is nothing in the church as the door was closed but there are many samadhi's outside the church. Then we went to another church. There we saw the real body of St.Francis Xavier. And we went to another church opposite to this one. There I saw the statue of Louis Vasco De Cameos, a Portuguese poet.

Miramar Beach
Then we went to Dona Paula. We visited many shops there and I bought a ring signed with Nike on it. My mother bought a necklace made out of shells. We went to a beach and I kept watch to the chappals there. Then we went to a cruise ship. It sailed for an hour around an island and we went to our hotel. We ate our dinner and we hit the bed immediately.

Next day, we went to Aguda Fort, a 341 year old fort and we went to two other beaches. We had our lunch at Dominos pizza. We ate spicy chicken pizza, stuffed garlic bread and a bottle of coca-cola. We went to another beach and the back to the hotel.

Snooker with Mom

It was my mummy-daddy's anniversary. The chef sent us a cake to cut and a bouquet. And we had a grand dinner. (The dinner menu is listed here..)

Fun at the pool

Next day at 8AM we went to the swimming pool and stayed there till 9. I ate my breakfast and watched 'Toy story' movie. We had our lunch and went to the Vasco-da-gama railway station. Our train was a Vasco - Bangalore link express. We boarded our connection to Chennai at Bangalore (our coach is C2). And out journey ended.

Nostalgic. 5 ISKCON

It was 1998 and I've just landed at the Chicago O'hare international terminal. Having had to fly from the dreary Chennai airport, it was an amazing experience to take in all that light and the curvy glasses of ceiling in that fantastic airport. And I realized that it is the same airport shown in the movie 'My best Friends wedding' which I saw a few months before at Devibala. I was waiting for my connection to Omaha, Nebraska (whose provincial airport actually reminded me of the Chennai airport) and wondering whether anyone will come to the airport there to pick me up.

Anyway, after taking in a decent meal (after all those stale ones in Lufthansa), I was walking around when I was approached by a strange looking man. He was of Mongolian origin, but was wearing a white dhoti as a panchakanjam and a white jibba. A kattu kudimi and a big namam in the forehead completed the strangeness of this fellow. And he was approaching me with his hands together greeting me with a 'Namaste'. It was a strange sight to say the least. He introduced himself as 'Haridas'. He was inviting me to have a look at his stand somewhere in the terminal.

Anyone who has read Sujatha's stories know why that is not a bright idea. In one of the stories (9th story in the link), a similar guy who was waiting for a connection in Chicago (eerie similarity!) is lured by a similar Indian looking guy for a short trip to a nearby temple and is made the center piece of attraction in a bizarre human sacrifice ceremony.

So having read that already, I was not ready to fall for it and was determined not to get out of the terminal (with so many people) at any cost. So I walked with him to his stand. He was talking about his previous birth where he was this South Korean (or Vietnamese, not sure which!) fellow who did so many things and finally found God through the ISKCON movement.

Before that, I've been to the small Iskcon temple in T.Nagar, not sure whether it is still there now, but has no idea who those people are. So he gave me a little sermon on the Krsna consiousness movement and its founder. By this time, we've reached his stand which is a small table with lots of big books. They were distributing free books and it caught my attention because of those 2 words 'free' and 'books'. So I picked one and he wanted my name and address. I told him that I was new to the country and though I've a name, I certainly don't have an address yet. He was a bit skeptical to believe, but then I took my leave with a couple big dozers from the stand.

All this came back to me, when I visited the 'new' Chennai Iskcon temple in ECR yesterday. It made me wonder how so much has changed yet there is so little change itself.
